Boardman Steel's growth is even more impressive given its roots: Conceived with little less than a dream --- without equipment, inventory or a facility --- the fledging firm had only founder president Jerome P. Deibel's ambition, drive and experience in steel design and fabrication to rely on. Before his young company was even legally organized, Deibel was joined by a lone hourly employee, Bernard Petrella, to whom goes the credit for providing the expertise in shop management that enabled the production of quality products with minimum effort.
In the beginning, as the firm undertook the production of its only product, expansion dams for use in bridges, a growing sales office sought to diversify by seeking contracts for the fabrication of structural steel for commercial and industrial settings. The resultant growth was characterized by imagination and a willingness to take on projects others were reluctant to handle.
Despite success and expansion, Boardman Steel will not outgrow its family. Having taken over the reins from his father, David C. Deibel continues the firms and family's commitment to Youngstown and the surrounding area. That commitment includes strong support that Deibel says is "an example of our desire to provide a positive influence on the lives of young people growing up in Youngstown."
At the heart of Boardman Steel's philosophy is respect for the individual, in its relationships with both customers and employees. In Deibel's words: "Boardman Steel aspires to make it possible for every employee to be able to enjoy a sense of job security through earnings and working conditions." Deibel gives the credit for his firm's success to its location as well as its employees. "Our growth will continue, " he says, "aided by the proximity of interstate highways and the firms philosophy which is to respond to the demands of our customers." A major factor in customer loyalty is Boardman Steel's exemplarily record of completing a broad array of challenging and complex projects. "Our customer is our most important asset. That is why we are here today."
